There are a lot of misconceptions out there about hiring a sports trainer. A private trainer does not try to take the place of a coach, but rather their focus is to work as a support mechanism for them. Coaches can have up to 120 athletes at any given time, which means it is not humanly possible to give every athlete the attention they need in order to improve their skill sets.

That’s where we step in. At The Edge, we feel there are 7 reasons every athlete should hire a sports trainer for their athlete, no matter the level of skill!

1.  Maintaining Skills
Sports training helps the athlete maintain, and even improve, their level of skill during the offseason. This is particularly useful if a young athlete would like to try a different sport but doesn’t want to fall behind or lose skills in their current sport.

2. Proper Techniques
Learning proper technique is key to injury prevention. Overuse in today’s young athletes has become a huge problem. A skilled trainer will work on proper mechanics and strengthen core muscles to help keep your athlete healthy.

3. Personalized Training
Sports trainers provide a change in coaching philosophy, skills, and practice drills. When an athlete is on a team, particularly a large team, workouts are designed with the entire group in mind. This means less-skilled kids will be required to perform the same workouts that the more-skilled kids do. This can lead to anxiety and a feeling of “lesser than” in a young athlete.  A private trainer creates workouts with individual athletes in mind, taking great care to provide a positive training environment.

4. Basics
Taking on a new sport can be intimidating. Sports trainers build confidence in athletes taking on a new sport by working with them in a few private lessons to help them get the basics down.

5. Additional Skills
If your athlete would like to try out a new position, they will need to work on a different skill and oftentimes are not given the opportunity to do so in practice. A trainer can help fill in the gaps they are not learning in team practices.

6. Confidence
Give your athlete a boost of confidence. A few hours spent with a trainer will go a long way toward helping your athlete feel comfortable and be a contributor in their next game.

7. Individual Improvement
Sports trainers are helpful when it comes to correcting a deficiency or bad habit. School sports practices are usually spent on team goals and team improvement. This is great for the team, but if your child needs some extra help to correct or develop a certain skill, a trainer can be a great solution.
